I am done with great things and big plans, great institutions and big success. I am for those tiny, invisible loving human forces working from individual to individual, creeping through the crannies of the world like so many rootlets, or the capillary oozing of water, which if given time, will rend the hardest monuments of pride.
Several years ago, I started wearing glasses and I immediately noticed something about them: smudges happen gradually, so gradually in fact, I often fail to realize just how much my vision is compromised by the dirt, fingerprints and other little dealings on the lenses. If you wear glasses, you can relate. There is a parallel in our lives here. Very often the little dealings in our life, we refer to as tolerations, sneak up on us, just like the smudges on a pair of glasses. Tolerations can include everything from an unbalanced check book to items of broken furniture, pictures you do not like, the color of a room, clothing with missing buttons and any of a thousand creepy little things gradually eroding the sharpness of our living. How does this happen? Much like the smudges on our eye glasses, these nasty little aggravations gradually dull us through their minute by cumulative might power. We tell ourselves it is just a little thing and really does not matter, or we will take care of it later. Eventually we lose our way; we end up feeling unproductive or unfocused and cannot figure out why. Take a look around you. I mean a hard look. Where have you been blinded by tolerations in your life? Start by making a list of all the little stuff bugging you and take action one item at a time. An amazing revelation will occur: as the little items disappear, you will start to see the big items more clearly. Something else you will notice is action creates momentum… one activity leads to another, and before you know you are whistling, “I can see clearly now the rain is gone. I can see all obstacles in my way…” Do not spend another moment struggling to see around or through the smudges of your life lenses. Make today the day you get busy removing the items preventing you from living more intentionally, fully and effectively. Remember, just as those smudges and fingerprints crept in before, they are likely to do so again. So start noticing the little items and clean them on a regular basis. Energy, focus and the power to take on bigger more important activities is the payoff. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in life. If we were to go through life without any obstacles, we would be cripples. We would not be as strong as what we could be.
