Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.
Not long ago, I had lunch with another writer. As we shared writing experiences, he told me about a student who had come to class for three weeks with the same unresolved issue. The teacher wisely pointed out until the student was willing to have a conversation with the person central to the issue, they would keep having the same pn-going issue over and over. He went on to point out this person’s failure to deal with the issue was absolutely affecting every other aspect of their life, particularly his career. It reminded me that in life, when we are getting the same message repeatedly, we need to pay attention. What messages have been repeating themselves in your life recently? For me, it has been my tendency to over commit. Yes even writers have stuff they need to work on. For a client I am writing about, it is an issue with the boss. For another, it is unwillingness to stop working seven days a week. Trust me, one way or another, life will get your attention. It will either get your attention by the small voice reminding you to listen and take some corrective action; or, it will get your attention with a loud scream of a major health crisis, a relationship breakdown, or some other undeniable wake up call. Why do we hesitate or ignore such persistent messages? Many times we wait, in hopes the situation will get better, or someone will rescue us. Or we think we are sparing someone’s feelings because we do not want to let them down. However, stop to think how much you are letting yourself down, and recognize this truth. Heed the persistent messages. Tell yourself the truth, and take the action you have hesitated to take for so long. Realize being more effective is any area of your personal or professional life involves removing obstacles and dealing with lessons in area seemingly unrelated. Really start listening to your messages. Stop resisting and take action. You will see how this affects every area of your life. If the situation has not gotten better for all of your waiting and no one is going to rescue you. It is time to pay attention and tell the truth.
